Gedaliah's Summer Job - By Bentzion Shaffer

When we were in high school, Gedaliah was hired by Rabbi Sumner Richmond to be a counselor at the Yeshiva's summer camp.

Now you have to understand that Gedaliah had zero experience with children or teaching or being a counselor. He was a complete intellectual who had his nose in a book 24 hours a day. He was totally unprepared for the job. At the end of the summer they had a little event to honor the counselors and Rabbi Richmond couldn't say enough praise about Gedaliah's leadership and Ahavas Yisroel. It was his first opportunity to reveal how magnificent he could be with children. Although he had plenty of troublemakers in his group, he could handle them. I do remember that one of the awards they gave out was a silver tray, which was just a metal cafeteria tray covered over with tinfoil.
